How to Create a Beautiful and Productive Raised Bed Garden Using Square-Foot Gardening

Becoming a Gardener Series 2: We are maximizing our garden space and growing various plants with minimal effort. To do this, we are implementing the square-foot gardening method. In this post, we'll take you through planning a raised bed garden using square-foot gardening. This method helps you efficiently use space, reduce weeds, and promote healthy plant growth. We'll be planting a mix of vegetablesherbs, and flowers that work well together and look beautiful in our garden. Let's dive in!

What is Square-Foot Gardening?

Square-foot gardening is a technique in which you divide your garden beds into small, manageable squares—each 1 foot by 1 foot—making it easy to plant, water, and maintain. This method allows you to grow many different crops in a small area, ensuring you get the most out of your garden space.

For this garden plan, we're using 4 raised beds that are each 4 feet by 4 feet. This gives us 16 square feet per bed, with each square divided into 16 smaller squares. We'll be planting a variety of plants with efficient spacing to make the most of every square inch.

Bed 1: Veggies and Herbs (Tomatoes, Peppers, Carrots, and Herbs)

In Bed 1, we'll be planting a combination of tomatoesbasileggplantcarrots, and marigolds, along with a couple of pepper plants. Here's how we'll arrange the bed:

  • Tomatoes: We'll plant one tomato per square foot along the trellis side of the bed. Tomatoes need room to grow, so we are going vertically.
  • Basil: Basil and tomatoes are great companions, so we'll plant two basil plants per square foot around the tomatoes. Basil enhances the flavor of tomatoes and helps repel pests.
  • Eggplant: We'll place one eggplant per square foot in the middle. Eggplants love the sun and have similar growing conditions to tomatoes. We will use cages to support them if needed.
  • Carrots: In the remaining space, we'll plant carrots, nine per square foot. These root veggies are small but grow well alongside tomatoes and eggplants.
  • Marigolds: These colorful flowers will be placed strategically between the veggies. Marigolds help repel pests, particularly aphids, and attract beneficial insects like ladybugs.
  • Pepper plants: Finally, we'll add two pepper plants next to the marigolds. Peppers need space and sunlight, so they'll do well in this spot.

Bed 2: Beans & Flowers (Vertical Growth)

Next, let's move to Bed 2, which is designed for plants that grow vertically. We'll plant pole beanssunflowersborage, and black-eyed susans:

  • Pole Beans: These beans will climb a trellis, and we'll set it up at the side of the bed. We'll plant one bean per square foot, allowing them to grow upwards and maximize space.
  • Sunflowers: Sunflowers add height and beauty, and they also help attract pollinators. We'll plant one sunflower per square foot along the front.
  • Borage: Borage is a great companion for beans because it attracts bees and improves soil health. We'll plant one borage per square foot between the beans and sunflowers.
  • Black-eyed Susans: These flowers attract butterflies and pollinators, adding color and function to the garden.

Bed 3: Mustards, Root Veggies, Corn, and Rutabaga

In Bed 3, we'll focus on a mix of leafy greens, root vegetables, and tall crops like corn. This bed will also feature rutabagasmustard greens, and nasturtiums for pest control:

  • Mustard Greens: We'll plant four mustard greens per square foot in the back of the bed. These greens grow quickly and can be harvested early.
  • Corn: Corn will be planted in the center, with one corn stalk per square foot. Since corn grows tall, it will create a natural backdrop for the other plants. (I may add 4 per sqft)
  • Rutabagas: Rutabagas need space to grow, so we'll plant one per square foot in the center of the bed. These root vegetables are hardy and grow well alongside mustard greens and corn.
  • Nasturtiums: Nasturtiums will be placed along the edges of the bed. These colorful flowers help deter pests like aphids and act as a trap crop for harmful insects.

Bed 4: Flowering Companion Bed and Okra

Finally, we'll set up Bed 4, which combines flowering plants with okra and peppers:

  • Cosmos and Verbena: These flowers will be planted across the front of the bed. They attract pollinators and add a beautiful splash of color.
  • Okra: Okra will be planted in the top left, where it will grow tall. Okra thrives in the heat, so it'll do well in this sunny spot. We'll plant one okra per square foot.
  • Peppers: Finally, we'll plant two pepper plants next to the okra. Peppers love the sun and need plenty of space, so this corner is perfect for them (going verticle).

Final Thoughts: Companion Planting and Tips

  • Companion Planting: One of the benefits of square-foot gardening is the opportunity to incorporate companion planting. For example, basil planted with tomatoes helps improve flavor and repels pests, while marigolds placed with peppers help keep aphids away.
  • Efficient Spacing: Square-foot gardening allows you to plant more in less space by ensuring each plant has enough room to grow. By planting crops like carrots, peppers, and beans close together, but in their own square, you'll make the most of your garden bed.
  • Watering: Raised beds dry out faster than in-ground gardens, so make sure to water regularly. Consider adding a drip irrigation system to keep everything evenly hydrated.
  • Soil Health: Regularly amend your soil with compost and organic matter to keep it rich in nutrients and support healthy plant growth.

Conclusion

With this square-foot garden plan, you'll have a beautiful and productive garden that's easy to maintain. By planting a variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers together, you can maximize space, improve soil health, and attract beneficial insects. Whether growing tomatoes, peppers, or flowers, square-foot gardening makes creating a thriving garden in a small space simple and fun.

Happy gardening, and enjoy the process of planting, growing, and harvesting your very own homegrown food!
